Is livestock grazing essential to mitigating climate change?

Sheila Cooke • Jun 03, 2023

Join us in a key debate on this controversial topic between a founder and leading proponent of Holistic Management (Allan Savory) and a prominent critic (George Monbiot). The event will be chaired by Professor E.J. Milner-Gulland, Tasso Leventis Professor of Biodiversity at the University of Oxford.

Entry to this event is free, but please book in advance.

Attend In-Person (Oxford), or Online

We, Christopher and Sheila Cooke, shall attend this event in-person to provide moral support to Allan Savory and Jody Butterfield, and we hope you consider doing so. At this moment there are 95 spaces left in Oxford. And yes, Allan and Jody will attend in-person.

If you plan to attend, please do let us know: info@3LM.network. We would like to coordinate sitting together in order to cheer on Allan.

Also, please invite others!

Reductionism vs. Holism

Many people have told us they are concerned about this debate. We are not worried. We believe people are hunting for new thinking, and Allan has this in spades.

To prepare yourself for listening to the debate, we encourage you to read or listen to this blog by Maren Morgan, "The Quantitative Cosmology The Historical Precedent for George Monbiot's Worldview and its Implications Today."

Maren makes the critical point that you can't beat reductionist thinking with reductionist thinking. Only holistic thinking will do. We wholeheartedly agree.

At the end of October, Pollardine Farm in Shropshire hosted the 3LM one day Low Stress Livestock Handling course, conducted by Miriam Parker, a livestock behaviourist and independent consultant. Parker transferred her equine skills to cattle and worked with herders across the world. Her work is influenced by her friend, US animal behaviourist Temple Grandin.
